FiveM / Resources and scripts

Installing FiveM Resources Without Breaking Your Server

Understand manifests, dependencies, resource order, and safe updates before adding another script.

Most resource failures are not mysterious. The wrong version, a missing dependency, an incomplete installation, or a startup-order issue can stop a good script from working.

Treat scripts like software dependencies, not files to scatter through your server. A few minutes of verification is much cheaper than debugging a whole pack of untested changes.

Install one resource at a time and check what it depends on.

Place a compatible resource in the server's resources directory, review its manifest and dependencies, configure it as instructed, then load it with the appropriate server command. Check logs and test with a player before moving on.

FXServer resources

What counts as a FiveM resource?

A resource is a directory containing scripts or assets, usually identified by an fxmanifest.lua manifest. Resources live in the server data directory's resources folder. Bracketed directories can group related resources.

Before copying anything, read the author's installation requirements and licensing terms. Confirm that the resource supports your FXServer artifact, game build, and framework.

Read manifests and dependency requirements

The manifest defines the resource's scripts, metadata, and dependency declarations. Some frameworks require shared libraries, a database adapter, or particular other resources to start first.

Do not rename directories arbitrarily when configuration and imports refer to the original resource name. Record any database migrations the resource requires, and back up the database before applying them.

Load resources in a controlled order

Use the server configuration and resource commands to start the appropriate components. A resource that isn't discovered may need a refresh of the resource list; a resource already running can be restarted using the supported command.

Install and test one new resource at a time. Inspect both startup errors and in-game behavior, including client-side console errors. Loading without a console error does not guarantee the gameplay feature works.

Make updates reversible

Keep copies of resources, configuration, and databases before major updates. Document which versions worked together. For heavily customized roleplay servers, use a staging instance so new resources do not disrupt live players.

Avoid downloading scripts from untrusted mirrors or bypassing licensing/escrow protections. Review who will receive administrative permissions, network access, or database credentials.

A couple more questions

What does ensure do?

It starts a stopped resource or restarts it if already running, according to the documented FXServer server commands.

Can I drop any script into any framework?

No. Resource compatibility depends on its framework, dependencies, runtime version, and configuration requirements.
