Valheim Dedicated Servers: Crossplay, Worlds, and Backups

A straightforward guide to persistent worlds, joining friends, crossplay, and safe saves.

A persistent Valheim world means the group doesn't need the original host online every time someone wants to build or explore.

The important decisions are surprisingly practical: which world to load, how people connect, who has the password, and how to recover the settlement after a failed update.

Keep the world name, networking mode, and save strategy consistent.

Use the dedicated server application or a managed host, configure your server name, world, password and connection options, and verify your group can join. Choose crossplay deliberately and protect the saved world independently of automatic backups.

Valheim dedicated server (Steam and crossplay options)

Give the server a stable identity

Valheim's dedicated server startup options include a public-facing server name, world name, password, and save directory. Keep your world identifier consistent so you do not accidentally launch a fresh world when migrating hosts.

If transferring an existing world, move the correct world files together and test the result before inviting the group back. Keep an untouched original copy.

Choose the right connection method

The standard Steam backend and the optional crossplay backend differ in how players discover and connect to the server. The official guide documents a -crossplay launch option and describes its networking behavior.

Without the crossplay backend, the guide describes the server port and the next port as relevant for the normal Steam setup, typically 2456 and 2457 with default settings. Managed hosting may allocate ports differently.

Backups are part of server setup

The dedicated server includes controls for world save intervals and automatic backup retention. Those are valuable conveniences, but a backup stored on the same machine is not protection from total machine loss.

Export and retain periodic offsite copies, especially before patches or changing world modifiers. Practice loading a copied world so recovery is a routine operation rather than a guessing exercise.

Decide who can join

The official dedicated server guide documents public listing controls and a password option. A private friend group may prefer not to advertise its world in the public browser.

Give trusted administrators access only to what they need, and avoid sharing account or panel passwords. Verify client and server version compatibility after major game updates.

A couple more questions

Do I need crossplay enabled?

Only if your group's platform mix requires it. Test the connection method with the clients you actually plan to support.

Can I move an existing world?

Yes, provided you migrate the correct world data and test it with a compatible server version. Always keep a pre-migration backup.
